Greece and the Geography

Ancient greece wouldn't be the same if the geopraphy wasn't isolated. The greeks were isolated from even themselves. This split them into city-states yet kept them connected as a nation that they were so similiar.

Being in the balkin penninsula causes them to only be able to trade with other countries only by water. They are surrounded by mountains and rivers conecting directly to the seas in the area. The greeks became ship masters due to the fact that most everythign they did had to invovle ships or it wouldn't be possible. Such as colonizing in other areas wouldn't be possible unlike Europe colonizing africa they could have easily dont that without boats. The colonization would just be harder.

Most of the city-states were inside valleys on top of big hills to give themselves defensive advantage and keep them unnoticed until very close. This tactic helped keep city-states well protected and in peace most of the time. Once found the city-states would be attacked more until finally they loose a battle or the city-state keeps protected for so long that other city-states would give up on invading.

Any cities on islands also had great advantages that ships had to sail around to find the island let alone get to the island to invade. The cities army could set up to fire arrows at them if they saw them coming and even set up ambushes at various places to slow or even diminish the forces before they even reached the main army to make the city lose less men and keep the army strong. This helped the city being able to invade other cities by making it easy to protect and harder to find making more soldiers sendable to the invasion of other cities.
